I am looking to change my student visa to a cultural studies visa to extend my residency in Tokyo. My lawyer says I can request 3+ years with a compelling letter to Immigration. My plan is to find schools and teachers that I can study with and document my process in studying the Traditional Arts and Performing Arts of Japan.

Sounds like a good plan. Find a couple of schools and teachers first, so you can include them in your letter to immigration. I guess you’ll also need to show them that you can afford to stay in Japan.
