We are a family of four (two boys ages 18 & 20) traveling by train as follows:
May 16 Tokyo Station to Matsumoto
May 22 Wakura Onsen/Nanao or Kanazawa to Kyoto
May 25 Kyoto to Tokyo
May 29 Tokyo Ginza area to Narita
Can someone suggest how to determine if a pass (and if so which one) might make sense or if we should just buy individual ticket?

Sorry for the slow follow-up. I hope your trip is still on.
If you could squeeze all the long distance stuff into one week, the 1 week JR pass would be worth the money. However, you don’t have enough travel to justify the 2 week pass, so if I were you I would just buy tickets at the JR office.
